Right vs Left

I normally do not read the editorials of the newspaper. For the most part I do not agree with the rantings and ravings of other people and choose not to subject myself to them. I was reeled into this one because I thought it was going to be about politics. Instead it was about people who drive in the left lane at the speed limit or slower. I am a firm believer that the left lane be used for passing only. As soon as you have accomplished your pass, move back to the right, damn-it! There are a few among us that feel it is their duty as Americans to impede the progress of those of us who like to heavy foot the gas pedal. On the other hand, there was the letter from David N. Walker of Fort Worth that felt that the speed limit "is an arbitrary figure and the prevailing flow of traffic is the rate of speed at which the general public feels it is safe to drive." He also compares speed limits to prohibition; "stating that it proved years ago that a law that the public does not back is a bad law." I cannot help but wonder if this argument has gotten him out of a speeding ticket when he was stopped. I may try it if I ever get stopped again. In all of this what struck me as funny is the following poem that ended the article and was submitted by Robert O. Frederick of Fort Worth:

This is a story of Johnny O'Day
Who died maintaining his right of way
He was right, dead right, as he drove along
But he's just as dead as if he were wrong.

That's a great poem! I never knew you felt so strongly about the left lane. Being raised by my father, I generally feel the same way.

Gosh... I wish you could send this to everybody who lives in Texas. Maybe to a few who live in Oklahoma as well. Nothing makes me madder than trying to pass in the left lane just to have it bottlenecked by one slower driver!!

I loath left-lane crawlers almost as much as folks that don't use their blinkers :-) It's especially repugnant when you see someone in the left lane in a nice sports car going under the speed limit.

In Europe they tend to be really good about using the left lane for passing only (which can be pretty scary at their speeds). There it's illegal to pass on the right. You'd get ticketed pretty fast if you hog the left lane.
