Been A While

Last Wednesday, I went to the Carter Blood Donor office in Arlington to make a donation. I spent about 15 minutes filling out the paper work required by whomever. When the paper work was completed I was called into a little room where I am asked more questions (like "have I ever paid anyone to have sex with me? and have I had sex with anyone who has paid for sex?), my blood pressure is checked, temperature taken and iron count is checked. It is on this last item that I failed. The minimum reading to pass is 12.5, my reading was 11.6. So, now I will have to answer yes to the question; "have you ever been refused for blood donation?" I went back on Saturday, when my blood count was 13.6. So I donated a pint then.

Thursday, I attended the 2nd installment of Casa Manana's Summer Musicals at the Bass Hall. It was Jesus Christ Superstar. I have seen the movie, but this is my first time for the live performance. The guy who played Jesus was amazing. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as did Dianna and her roommate who I conned into attending the series with me. One thing of note: the lady who had seats to our left began crying about the time Judas betrayed Jesus in the Garden and did not stop crying til the final scene and the bows were taken. We even got an encore, she left before the encore. Do you think she didn't realize what was about to happen?

Well, you know it's gonna happen, but you still kinda hope for a happy ending, dontcha?

I mean, if they had pulled a deus ex machina, it wouldn't have been all that inappropriate...

Did you not go to Houston when Meredith performed in Jesus Christ Superstar? I thought you did. Or am I misremembering, and Meredith wasn't in it but we all went for some other reason?

You're lucky they'll still take your blood. They tell me I've spent too much time in England. The thing that rings so untrue about that is England still takes blood from its own citizens! The rule against it is a prime example of bureaucratic stupidity and has no basis at all in scientific or rational thinking.

Well of course England does domestic blood drives, where else would they be getting their blood from? The same goes for other European countries (if you lived there at least five years from 1980-96 you can't donate in the US) or malarial countries (a visit bars you for a year and imigration for three). I mean, if the recipient is as likely to have a condition as a donnor, then you don't have to worry as much about the odds. And maybe they test for these things.

Still, I too am miffed that I can't donate when their site says that they only have a day or so of blood supplies. I swear I didn't eat any crazy beef!

I recall seeing David Patton's son in "JC Superstar" and really enjoyed the live production. It was at the Town and Country theatre in Houston. I also remember where I first heard the music - Kitty Lou introduced it to Pat and me when we were in W.F. one time.

Stepan, The whole plot of "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a deus ex machina.

Yes, but which "deus"?
