Here is a website that I googled to try to find an answer to a question that I had posed to Danny. I interrupted his game of EverQuest to ask him this question. I keep getting emails from friends and strangers that require a download. When I complete the download the file name that comes up is something like: neomail.pl. When I was talking to Danny, he said that this is something the mail server is doing and requested I forward the mail to him. He had never heard of this particular extention. So I forwarded the email and as an afterthought BCC'd my other email address that I have with SBC dsl. The email did not show up as a download. The text of the email was there for me to read. I sent Danny a follow up email telling him of my success. Then I went to google to get a definition for the extention, pl. At this site I found pages and pages of definitions, save the one that I was wanting. Also, I want Stepan to know that he does not get all my stupid computer questions. I am an equal opportunity stupid computer question asker. I hope you have enjoyed your Saturday morning, Step.

.pl
[text/plain, text/x-script.perl]
1. Perl script language source code file
2. Harvard Graphics
Palette
3. Prolog language source code file
4. TeX
Property List font metric file
Of those, I suspect that the first is the most likely. Can you send me all of or an extract from the "text of the email"?
Wow! I got a comment from Patrick. Almost as good as getting one from Daniel.
Posted by: me at November 8, 2003 06:51 PMYour web mail application NeoMail is written in Perl. Apparently, when you click on an attachment link it doesn't let your browser know the name of the attachment, so the browser uses the name of the web application instead (i.e. neomail.pl).
So it's not a problem with the email, but rather with NeoMail. If it bugs you, you could use one of the other web mail applications that came with your account (I use Horde). Also, if you retrieve the email with Outlook (or whatever you use on your PC) you should have no problems with the attachments.
Finally, you should not be downloading attachments you get from STRANGERS! And I wouldn't be so sure about friends, either... Unless you know it's a picture, chances are it's a virus, anyway.
