Magdalena Anežka

There is a picture posted on the web of the new addition to our family. As you can see here, she is even beautiful when she is crying. I am so happy to be her grandma.

Again...congratulations!!! I know how long you've waited to me a grandma. So is "grandma" what you want Magdalena to call you?

I hate to inject any negativity into this joyous occasion, but frankly I'm a little concerned. Where is little Magda going to get that little doohickie over the z in her middle name? (I think the doohickie is actually a hachek. That's easy to remember, because whenever you see one, you can say: Ha! a Czech! (Please accept my humble apologies.)) I see difficulties when she goes to school and the teacher asks her how to spell her middle name.

Is there an English version of her name? Anetshka, maybe? Isn't the -ka a diminuative? If so, it almost looks like the diminuative of the French g*rl's name, Annette. (My first attempt to post this failed with: Your comment could not be submitted du to questionable content: g*rl, where the * was an "i". Isn't that a little ridiculous? We'll see if my 2nd attempt, bowdlerized, works...)

Well, her birth certificate doesn't have the hacheck -- the lady at the hospital tried to find it but wasn't successful. I imagine that US birth certificates limit you to the ISO 8859-1 or, more likely, ASCII character set. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem and is probably approached differently from state to state.

The english version of Anezka is Agnes, but we prefer to use the Czech version, which refers to Agnes of Bohemia. Frankly I don't like transliterated names and prefer the accent-less version of the letter. Maybe some day the Government will switch over to using Unicode and then this whole mess will become moot.
